Recessed Lighting Ideas Also known as “can lights” or “downlights”, recessed lighting makes an excellent and versatile source of light for the kitchen, bathroom, hallway, dining or living room and more. At Lamps Plus, we carry a full range of fixtures and parts, including recessed housing components, trim and bulbs. You’ll find top brands such as Lightolier, Halo and Juno, as well as a complete selection of California Title 24 Compliant lighting designs. Before you buy, you’ll want to ask a few questions about your lighting project: New construction or a remodel? New construction housings attach directly to ceiling supports, while remodel can lights are lighter so that they can be installed directly into the ceiling material. Is insulation present or not? Install IC rated housings where insulation will be in direct contact with the housing, and Non-IC rated housings where it will not. What type of ceiling are you working with? Sloped ceiling housing fixtures and trims can be matched to the angle of a ceiling. For bathrooms and showers, “wet” or “shower location” rated housings are an absolute must for safety. What are you using your lights for? For general lighting, consider energy-efficient fluorescent designs or LED recessed lighting kits. For reading and other tasks as well as artwork, try directional trims and halogen bulbs. Other choices include economical line voltage fixtures or high quality low voltage designs. Recessed Lighting Kits To get everything in a one-stop shop, look for a light kit. Kits are available for all sizes and types of recessed lighting. Line-voltage kits are your standard light kit. Low-voltage kits have a built-in transformer and help with energy savings, but are more expensive. Low-voltage recessed lights also require a special dimmer switch (sold separately). LED retrofit kits let you convert recessed lights to LED and work with existing housings.
