As he played more golf, he began to visualize a new kind of golf course. His pure bred Santa Gertrudis Cattle Farm located in Locust Grove, Va., was an ideal site with its beautiful gently rolling countryside. Situated 75 minutes from Washington, D.C., and Richmond, 45 minutes from Charlottesville and only 15 minutes from Fredericksburg, the course is easily accessible to thousands of golfers. The philosophy of providing players with a “no-frills” championship course and keeping fees at the lowest of any course in the area, will assuredly bring a more affordable and fun golf experience within reach of thousands of players. The 180-acre course was designed by Bill Ward, Jr. – an up-and-coming designer with six golf courses to his credit. Designing 27 holes, Ward made each one with a distinct character to offer a wide range of challenges and experiences. Maximum effort has been put into individualizing each hole so that the golfer will feel as if he/she has played 27 different courses rather than playing the same hole 27 times. Each hole has a story to tell. Ward has brought some new ideas to Virginia golf, taking elements from major courses in Florida and California. There are elevated tees, bounce bunkers, rock and railroad tie walls in and around the greens, bunkers waiting to catch an errant shot, an island green, a stunning waterfall Par 3, and seven water crossings. The signature hole is a par 6, and when played from the championship tee is 841 yards. This is recognized by the Guinness' Book of World Records as “The Longest Golf Hole in the United States.” The design gives every level of golfer an option on how to play the hole – while challenging for the golf pro and low-handicapper, it offers a fair test for the high-handicapper. You will always remember you played “The Longest!” Bill Meadows' talent for unique landscaping is evident throughout the course. Seasonal colorful flora provide aesthetic appeal and charm. Spring colors abound from February throughout the year into autumn hues of brown, red and gold. Colorful barks, stems, and architecturally interesting tree and shrub shapes are evident thoughout the winter months. Y9ou'll enjoy playing your round as the course weaves its way though a pre-civil war homestead and cemetery and on the very ground where civil war battles were fought. Fields of grazing champion purebred Santa Gertrudis Cattle adds another dimension you won't ever forget! Everyone remembers when they played Meadows Farms!

Meadows Farms was born 56 years ago when Bill “The Farmer” Meadows began a summer business selling produce to supplement his teaching and coaching salary. Eventually, this door-to-door operation developed into roadside market sites until he and his wife Betty opened their first permanent location. Farmer and Betty expanded their product line and site locations, growing to become the 4th largest retail nursery in the USA, with over 20 locations. Meadows Farms is now a second generation family owned and operated business, led by Farmer and Betty's son Jay Meadows. The Farmer's philosophy of high quality plants and customer service at the lowest prices remains the same today as the company heads into the future.

Meadows Farms has to compete with several large retail garden centers just down the road (Home Depot, Lowes, Wally World) and they do a pretty good job of it. If you're looking for a nice selection of some of the more popular annuals, perennials, herbs, trees and shrubs, this is the place to go. The plants are always healthy and very well cared for. I like that many of the shrubs and trees are balled & burlap-wrapped. This means the plants have been growing in a field and cared for for about five to seven years by a professional grower before being carefully removed from the soil, preserving as much of the root system as possible, the root ball wrapped in burlap and then transported to a nursery for sale. Balled and burlapped trees and shrubs are good sized mature plants that, when planted in your yard, will take off and grow much faster than a garden center plant which is water stressed, usually root-bound and has been growing in a gallon plastic pot for a season or two, at best. Balled and burlapped plants are a bit more expensive than potted plants but they are well worth the extra cost in terms of vigor, growth and maturity. My only disappointments with Meadows Farms is that they do not carry a good selection of roses, their pots are all pretty much the same (and ugly to boot), and the garden store is boring and uninspiring. There is a market for cool gardening paraphernalia, outdoor accessories and much more that I don't think they take full advantage of. Overall though, Meadows Farms has a great selection of plants and is a good value for the top quality plants that you get.

Ramblin’ in the Garden Silverbell A year ago, flowers of the Silverbell (Halesia carolina, below) were ruined by an early April freeze that most notably damaged tender new leaves of Japanese maples and mophead hydrangeas. While damage to the Silverbell was minimal besides the lost floral display, damaged foliage on maples and hydrangeas was evident through the year, with some trees and shrubs not recovering fully until growth this spring. A Perfect Day for Planting This Sunday was perfectly timed, a cool afternoon following a rainy Saturday, with more rain moving in this evening that is expected to linger for a few days. This was a perfect day for planting, cool enough that the afternoon sun barely raised a sweat, and with rain on the way to get new plantings off to a splendid start. More Japanese Maples Than Necessary? Yes, there are more Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) in this garden than necessary, but there is no need to count. There are thirty, or forty-some, but this is not a contest, and certainly there are gardens with finer and more numerous maples.
