Plant shade trees – Exercise your green thumb by planting shade trees around the house. Design associate Andrew Spiering, formerly of Terra Ferma Landscapes, suggests casting shadows on the southwestern exposure of the home using large deciduous trees, like oaks, sycamores and elms. “Other ideas include increasing humidity around the home using layered planting or reducing hardscape,” he says.

You can gain shade by planting new trees and let in more light by hiring an arborist to thin branches and remove any undesirable trees. Beware of trees marketed as fast growing, as they’re often too fast for their own good and plague homeowners with brittle limbs, messy seeds and invasive roots. Instead, choose trees that you wouldn’t mind seeing for many years to come.

When it comes to exterior landscaping, apparently trees are the fundamental accent used. They remarkably complete the entire ground design. And knowing that trees/plants gives off oxygen, it would be better to always have them planted in your home grounds.

That type of treatment could feel rather severe, but the designer has used several tricks to soften the scene: The blue stone walkway looks like a band that nicely frames the lawn. The trees are limbed up and planted in a row, hedge-like.The little clipped boxwood balls echo the green, organic shapes of the trees. The cedar fencing is natural rather than painted, silhouetting the sculptural trees; fence boards are aligned horizontally to reinforce the contemporary vibe.

Use pleached trees or tall, thin plants – Pleached trees (where the foliage is trimmed to form a hedge) are ideal for small gardens as they let in light above and allow space for planting below. The pleached trees used here are the lush and dense Ficus microcarpa ‘Hillii‘. To their right is a planting of bamboo, ideal for narrow areas due to its tall, thin form.

Don’t build a raised bed – Most gardeners make a mistake of building a raised bed around the base of the tree in an attempt to create better soil for the flowers. Unfortunately, when doing this they can harm or even kill the tree. Most all trees have surface roots that require oxygen to survive. When compost, soil, and mulch are piled up thick around a tree, it suffocates the roots and allows no oxygen to get to them. This can also cause the roots and lower trunk of the tree to decay. Although you will have a nice flower bed, in a few years the tree will be nearly dead.

Solution: Check for plants that would work well in your space. If it’s a really hot, sunny spot, maybe you want to go with a succulent. Or, get a great landscaping book for your area to help you figure out what to plant and when, as well as how and when to fertilize.

Mistake: There is a lot of sticker shock in the world of plants. People often think “it’s just a couple of plants, how expensive could it be?” Landscaping is actually 30 percent more expensive than any other type of home improvement project. Another area that gets underestimated is the budget, and one of the biggest factors in a budget is the labor involved. It always costs more, and people cost the most.

Solution: Place your containers where you want them, and then go inside and look through every major window to see what they’ll look like before you plant. It should be like a painting. When you look out, you should see the glass framed with beautiful trees and foliage.

In this area in my yard, there are so many trees clustered in one spot that there was always bare ground and leaves. I decided to put in a nice path and bench and create a shade garden full of azaleas and hydrangeas to make it a nice sitting area. Because hydrangeas require moist soil, I incorporated a sprinkler system in to the beds.

Solution: Before you decide what to plant in your garden, think about what pests you have in relation to what you’d like to plant. For example, pretty flowering plants can attract deer, so you might want to throw in some bitter-tasting ones among them. Once they taste the wrong one, they are likely to stop coming around. If there are wild rabbits around, you may need to shelter your garden bed by building a small fence. Chicken wire is another option.
